A Quilting Bee

Join Crosswinds Ensemble for a musical patchwork spanning three continents and one hundred years. Old American folksongs weave between neo-classical Danish dances. Edgy funk rubs up against Romanian romance.

PROGRAM

"Black" (2008/2015) by Marc Mellits (b. 1966) featuring Hamble Geary and Chris Haycroft

Two bassoons duke it out in a dark, jazzy duel.

"Divertimento" (1940) by Svend Schultz (1913-1998)

A retro homage to the eighteenth century by turns arresting, quirky, peaceful and capricious.

"Dixtuor” (1906) - II. Modérément - Vivement by Georges Enescu (1881-1955)

Rhapsodic, full of gentle nostalgia and soothed sorrow.

Excerpts from "Carmina Burana" (1937/1981) by Carl Orff (1895-1982) arr. Wanek

By turns energetic, melancholic and fiery

“A Quilting Bee” (2002) by Clark McAlister (b. 1946)

Before social media, the quilting bee was the original rumour mill. Gossip along with traditional tunes given some extra spice - the exaggeration is half the fun!
